General Election
A General Election is the election in which federal and state officers, members of Congress and of the general assembly, county and township officers, and other officers appear on the ballot. General Elections are held the 1st Tuesday after the 1st Monday in November of each even-numbered year.

Candidate Filing Period

  • County Candidate Filing Deadline
    • Friday, March 22 at 5:00 pm - Partisan offices
  • County Filing Dates Partisan and Township offices:
    • Monday, August 5 - First day for NPPO candidates and candidates nominated by petition to file
    • Wednesday, August 28 at 5:00 pm - Deadline for County filing
  • County Agricultural Extension Council Filing Deadline:
    • Wednesday, August 28 at 5:00 pm
  • County Hospital Trustees:
    • Wednesday, August 28 at 5:00 pm
  • Soil & Water Conservation Board:
    • Wednesday, August 28 at 5:00 pm

Voter Registration

Pre-Registration deadline for voter registration closes at 5:00pm Monday, October 21. Persons wishing to participate in this election who register to vote after October 21 will be required to provide proof of identification (i.e. current and valid photo identification card with an expiration date) AND proof of residency in their voting precinct when they go to the polls on election day or when they request an absentee ballot in-person. Other provisions may also apply. Persons not registered to vote by October 21, should expect a longer processing time at the polls on election day.

Absentee Ballots

Absentee Ballots will be available beginning Wednesday, October 16, for mail and in-person voting. Download the absentee ballot request form here. 

  • The Auditor's Office can begin accepting Request Forms on Tuesday, August 27.
  • The first day of in-person absentee voting and the first day the Auditor's Office can mail ballots is Wednesday, October 16.
  • The last day an absentee ballot may be requested to be mailed to a voter for this election is Monday, October 21 by 5 pm.
  • In-person absentee voting in the office of the Adair County Auditor closes at 4:30pm on Monday, November 4.
  • Requests for absentee ballots must be in writing submitted by mail, to the address below, or electronically, to auditor@adaircountyiowa.org or elections@adaircountyiowa.org.
    • When requesting electronically, the original request form is still required. When mailing, the original form must be postmarked by October 21, 2024. If delivering in person it must be recieved by 8:00 pm election day, November 5, 2024 to: Adair County Auditor, 400 Public Sq Ste 5, Greenfield, IA 50849 

All absentee ballots MUST be received by 8:00pm on Election Day IN THE AUDITORS OFFICE to be considered on time to be counted. Postmarks no longer are acceptable.

Extended Hours and Labor Day

Extended hours are available for voter registration and absentee voting in the Adair County Auditor's Office. In addition to regular hours of Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, extended office hours will be as follows:

  • Wednesday August 28 - 8 am to 5 pm - County Filing Deadline 
  • Monday, September 02 - Labor Day - Courthouse Closed
  • Tuesday, September 03 - 8 am to 5 pm - Withdrawl, Objection, and Substitution Deadline
  • Thursday, September 19 - 8 am to 5 pm - Satellite Petition Deadline
  • Monday, October 21 - 8 am to 5 pm - Absentee Request Deadline 
  • Friday, November 1 - 8 am to 5 pm - Last Day to Challenge Absentee Voters
  • Saturday, November 2 - 9 am to 5pm - Required 8 Hours Open for In Person Absentee Voting
  • Tuesday, November 5: Election Day; Polls will be open from 7 a.m to 8 p.m. for in-person voting and Auditor's Office open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Absentee ballot drop off
