County Attorney

This is not under the guidelines of Employment, but appointment to an elected office,
The purpose of this position is to be appointed to serve in the role of Adair County Attorney until an Attorney is duly elected. This position will primarily be devoted to conducting criminal prosecution, advising public officials and law enforcement officers, and performing additional tasks as needed.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Supervises paralegal and legal assistant work.

Prosecutes traffic and simple misdemeanors, juvenile delinquencies and child welfare cases, indictable misdemeanors and felonies, and mental health and substance abuse committals.

Advises law enforcement officers concerning criminal investigations, and interprets laws, rulings and regulations for law enforcement officers and agencies in Adair County.

Prepares legal documents, including but not limited to trial information and minutes of testimony, motions, briefs, and resistances.

Gathers evidence in civil, criminal, juvenile, and other cases to formulate defense or to initiate prosecution or other legal action.

Conducts legal research.

Interviews victims and witnesses.

Engages in all stages of trial preparation and trial practice, including bench and jury trials.

Additional Assignments:

Miscellaneous other duties as outline in the Iowa Code.

Education & Experience:

Juris Doctor Degree or equivalent and license to practice law in the State of Iowa. Experience as a prosecutor preferred.

Job Requirements:

Ability to perform job duties and responsibilities listed above.

Knowledge of computer word processing, database applications, state and local agency database and electronic filing systems, video and audio equipment

Ability to read, analyze and understand complex documents.

Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquires and complaints.

Ability to write legal documents and make effective, persuasive arguments.

Ability to interact and deal professionally and effectively with staff, general public, business and professional contacts, and law enforcement officials doing business with the office or courts.

Must possess a high level of integrity and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
